Prince Harry has accused his brother, Prince William, of physical violence in his upcoming memoir, Spare (out on January 10). Per The Guardian, which obtained a copy of the memoir, the fight occurred over Harry’s now-wife Meghan Markle, whom William allegedly called “difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive.”
Their confrontation about Meghan escalated until, according to Harry, William “grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and…knocked me to the floor.”
Per The Guardian, Harry goes on to say that the moment resulted in “visible injury” to his back. He also allegedly says William hoped to talk about “the whole rolling catastrophe” of their relationship, but when William arrived to Kensington Palace (where Harry was living at the time, ahead of his move to Frogmore Cottage), he was “piping hot.”
William reportedly “complained” about Meghan, and Harry accused him of “parrot[ing] the press narrative” about her. William claimed he was trying to help, to which Harry replied, “Are you serious? Help me? Sorry—is that what you call this? Helping me?”
Harry allegedly left to the kitchen, where he gave William a glass of water and said, per his recollection, “Willy, I can’t speak to you when you’re like this.”
“He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”
Apparently, William tried to get Harry to fight back, but he wouldn’t engage, so William left “looking regretful and apologized.” He then “turned and called back: ‘You don’t need to tell Meg about this.’”
Harry recalls replying, “You mean that you attacked me?” to which William responded, “I didn’t attack you, Harold.”
Initially, Harry just told his therapist about the incident, but then Meghan noticed “scrapes and bruises” on his back. He writes that she “wasn’t that surprised and wasn’t all that angry,” adding that “she was terribly sad.”
This is obviously a major accusation, and the palace has yet to respond.
