This Pop Princess Just Won the 'TIME100' Reader Poll After Almost 2 Million Votes Were Cast
Oops! She did it again.
While Britney Spears has won a Grammy Award, earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, broken numerous records and sold hundreds of millions of albums, it looks like the pop princess has another achievement to add to her list.
Each year, TIME publishes the TIME100—a list of people, who the editors deem to be the one hundred most-influential people in the world. However, prior to the magazine's official list, TIME holds a poll where readers can cast their vote for who they believe to be the most influential person of the past year.
Now, the results from the 2021 reader poll have been released, and Britney Spears took the crown after 1.8 million people cast their votes, with the singer nabbing 4% (~72,000) of the votes.
In the official announcement from TIME , they explained why Spears has been so heavily in the spotlight this past year, writing: “The famed artist dominated the news cycle this year as a fan-led campaign to end her 13-year conservatorship under her father gained momentum, with people around the world calling to #FreeBritney.” They added, “Spears spoke openly in court for the first time in June about her circumstances, alleging she’d been subject to 'abusive' conditions, and her legal battle for autonomy highlighted a system that many disability rights advocates have long fought to reform.”
Spears was up against some tough competition, with Health Care Workers coming in at second place and Vaccine Developers rounding out the top three. Following these two groups who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic, über-successful K-pop group BTS came in fourth, while Olympic gymnast Simone Biles nabbed fifth place.
The official TIME100 list will be released on September 15. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled to see if Spears gets a spot.
