Manning's 18-Season Football Career
If you know football, you know the Manning family. On March 24, 1976, Manning was born to former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and his wife, Olivia. He and his brothers, Eli and Cooper, grew up in New Orleans, LA, before Manning moved to Knoxville to play football for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. In 1998, when Payton was just 22 years old, he was drafted as the number one overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts.
When he was picked by the Colts in 98, he signed a six-year contract for $46.3 million, which included a $11.6 million signing bonus. While his first year wasn't his best year to date, he did set five separate NFL rookie records including most touchdown passes in a season and most interceptions in a rookie year. Plus, he also landed a spot on the NFL All-Rookie First Team.
After his first season, Manning's records and accomplishments only increased. During his time with the Colts, he led the team into the playoffs in 11 of his first 13 seasons. During this time Manning took the team to two Superbowls. One in 2007 when the Colts defeated the Bears 29 to 17 (the franchise's first Superbowl win in over 30 years) and another when they played the New Orleans Saints and lost 31 to 17.

In 2011, after 14 seasons with the Colts, Manning suffered a neck injury which resulted in an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) and ultimately ended his career with the Colts.
In a 2011 statement Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay said, "Peyton represented what we aspire to have in our players. He promised to win for the Colts years ago, and he did. His achievements are as notable as those of any athlete in any sport, and I offer him my sincerest thanks for his outstanding service and example."
Despite his neck injury, Manning was a hot commodity and was approached by several teams, including the Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, and the Arizona Cardinals. Ultimately, Manning signed a five-year $96 million contract with the Denver Broncos.
"I realize I don't have 14 years left, by any means," Manning said in a statement. "This isn't something where I'm just building a foundation to do something in two years or three years. This is a now situation. We're going to do whatever we can to win right now. That's all I'm thinking about right now."
