Penguin Cruises Around Popular Surf Break in Brazil (Watch)
Remember the 2007 cartoon "Surf's Up" that featured some of surfing's biggest stars like Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and Salema Masekela?
It had a storyline strangely similar to the Eddie Aikau, surf hero lost-at-sea scenario but with a cast of penguins. The footage below is reminiscent of "Surfs Up" with a penguin in Brazil who seems to enjoy cruising the lineup and hanging out with surfers.
And it's not snatching boards like that Californian sea otter we recently reported on.
The drone footage above was posted by Gabriel Klabin of Brazil and captioned:
"Surfing at Arpoador 22/08/23"
Klabin's footage shows the penguin floating around in beautiful, bright blue water getting close to surfers, cruising around the lineup, and even duck diving waves.
Surfers seem pretty stoked to see it, keeping their distance and throwing shaka as it swims by.
This penguin isn't shy either, since this surf spot is a pretty busy one.
According to Surfline, Arpoador is:
"A lefthand semi-point located on the headland that separates Copacabana Beach and Ipanema Beach, Arpoador is at the heart of Brazilian surfing."
Klabin tagged Pedra Do Arpoador Conserva??o, which according to Google Translate means Arpoador Stone Conservation. ASC reposted another one of Klabin's penguin clips on its page with the following information:
Between June and October, it's not rare to see penguins in the southeast region.
They come from the Malvin Islands, Argentina, and Chile, but they come to the Southeast of Brazil trying to escape the extreme cold of the Patagonia region.
Some arrive exhausted and hungry, becoming weakened, demoralized, and even sick after traveling kilometers!
Don't get close, don't disturb your break, and don't feed them!! If you notice anything strange, call your local lifeguard on his post, he'll know what to do!
