The Oscars Just Introduced a Brand-New Category: Popular Film
Deadpool, Wonder Woman and Black Panther are finally getting a fair shot at the Oscars.
Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced it will welcome box office blockbusters into the Oscars fold in a meaningful way with a brand-new category called Popular Film.
“Change is coming to the #Oscars,” the Academy tweeted. “Here’s what you need to know: A new category is being designed around achievement in popular film.”
The new category offers traditionally snubbed movies like the Star Wars saga and studio comedies a leg up in getting the recognition they deserve. Alas, many (ie: Twitter) are unsatisfied by the distinction and claim the Popular Film category insinuates that high-grossing films cannot be “good” or “artistic.”
The AMPAS did not specify when this new category will make its way onto members’ ballots. It did, however, reveal that the 2020 Oscar ceremony will air in a live three-hour event on February 9, leading us to gather that this new category might not make its debut until then.
You might want to dust off that tux, [insert names of the trillion Marvel stars here].
