You Can Now Learn Hawaiian With Duolingo
Hawaii may still be in the United States, but it’s a world away. And your trip to the 50th state will definitely be more fruitful if you can drop in something a bit more local than “Aloha.”
Duolingo has partnered with a network of more than 50 schools teaching Hawaiian culture to bring a free ?lelo Hawai?i course to the app.
Over the past few years, there has been a movement in Hawaii to bring back the Hawaiian language. Those who are pushing re-education imagine a Hawaii where the language is so widely spoken, you could walk into a coffee shop and order with a “ke ?olu?olu.”
“This course is not about replacing classes; it’s about making ??lelo Hawai?i more accessible,” Keiki Kawai?ae?a, who is working with Hawaiian cultural schools to bring back the language, said in a statement. “If you are too busy to enroll in classes or even if you just want to brush up on what you learned, Duolingo is an accessible resource.”
In order to create the course, Duolingo worked with a team of bilingual Hawaiian-language specialists. Through the course, learners may be able to gain a better grasp of traditional Hawaiian culture and storytelling.
Hawaiian will be available on the app from October 8 to coincide with Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Good luck and laki maika?i with your new studies.
