No One Can Get Over Olympic Diver Tom Daley's Surprising Hidden Talent
Tom Daley's talents are undeniable. The four-time Olympic diver from Great Britain won his first gold medal at the Tokyo Games for men's synchronized platform diving with partner Matty Lee, and he celebrated the victory in an unexpected way: by knitting!
Daley began sharing his knitting and crocheting talents on his Made With Love by Tom Daley Instagram feed in September 2020. Like many others, he took up crafting during the Covid-19 quarantine. He explains, "I started knitting at the beginning of lockdown and have been obsessed ever since. I have started to crochet now also!" He has since created some incredible sweaters and blankets, and even a couch for his cat!
This new talent served him well when he won the Olympic gold medal.
He took to Instagram to show off the medal cozy he created to keep his medal from getting scratched. The case has the Union Jack on one side and the Japanese flag on the other. Daley captioned the video, "THANK YOU TO ALL MY FELLOW STITCHERS! ?? Learning to knit and crochet has helped me so much through these Olympics and we won GOLD yesterday ?? I made a little medal case too! ???????? YAY!"
Daley explains, "The one thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting and crochet and all things stitching."
His fans are so impressed by his skills, and thousands commented on his video.
One fan wrote, "The cutest thing on IG this morning. Huge congratulations ??" Another said, "As if we couldn’t love you anymore ?? ??" And another commented, "Huge congratulations—we’ve watched you since you were young. The UK is so proud of you for winning the most deserved of gold medals (amazing knitting obv another bonus!) ??????"
The athlete has also somehow found the time to work on an Olympic sweater, and he's been sharing his progress on Instagram.
What's next for Daley? He will compete for the men's 10M platform gold next week. We hope he has more medal cozies to knit very soon!
