Newfoundland Dog Who Walks Sister to Bus Stop Every Day For Years Decides He Doesn't Want to Let Her Go
Newfoundland dogs have long been prized for their protective instincts. They are often thought of as a “nanny” dog capable of watching over young children. In fact, J.M. Barrie based the nursery dog Nana that belonged to the Darlings in Peter Pan on his own Newfoundland dog. They have also been essential to the practice of water rescue for hundreds of years.
But, as this family learned after several years of allowing their Newfoundland to walk their daughter to the school bus stop—they may not be as reliable as you want. Especially when the dog would rather play hooky with his favorite girl.

In this video, we see years’ worth of clips of a little girl walking down the front walk to her bus stop alongside her pretty Landseer Newfoundland dog, Chewie. It’s an adorable sight, and speaks to the strong bond between animal and child as well as to how well-trained the pet is.

He’s been doing it every morning since he was a puppy, and you can watch him grow as his charge does, as seasons, hairstyles and even backpacks change.
Only this time, after three solid years of accompanying the little girl to her bus, he’s decide that she’s not going to school today. He refuses to turn right at the sidewalk and instead pulls her away from her destination, refusing to budge.
Guess he wants a little extra quality time.
Is a Newfoundland Right For You?
Newfoundland dogs come from the area of Canada that gave them their name. There, they were bred as working dogs to help the fisherman of the island pull fishing nets and haul carts. They are especially adapted to working in the water, with thick, water-resistant coats, large lung capacities, and webbed paws, that makes them perfect for swimming, water rescue, or just, you know, attacking sprinkler heads. (Maybe that was just my own Newfie.)
They are very large, have a tendency to droop, and are prized as gentle giants. They are great dogs for families and children due to this friendliness and protective instincts around children. The one I had growing up would sit by the side of the pool and watch us play, as he’d been trained to be a lifeguard himself (he had not, but there was no telling him that).
Dog’s Day Out
“I think I would have let the dog call a mental health day,” observes one person in the comments of this video, while others make up even wilder suppositions about “a dog’s intuition,” supposing everything from the dog understanding that the daughter didn’t want to go to school to the dog having a supernatural premonition that something bad was going to happen there. It’s honestly amazing how many people are parachuting into this woman’s touching post to warn her that dropping her daughter off at school means certain doom.
Some people have the weirdest theories.
Never fear—the dog was just being a goober and wanted extra time with his girl.
“His plan didn't work!” Their mom writes. “I sent her to school but he refused to walk her.”
At least some people are in agreement that this little show of will is nothing but the usual canine antics.
“What amazing memories your daughter and Chewy are making!! It must keep a smile on your face all the time to be able to watch,” said one person who was amused by the situation.
