Naomi Osaka makes dramatic hair change after Australian Open win: 'I’m living for this!'
Naomi Osaka is giving anime vibes with her latest look.
On Thursday, the 23-year-old tennis prodigy debuted her new pink hair in a stunning selfie shared to Instagram. She paired her bright locks with bold pink eyeliner and matching light pink lip.
"Sakura could never lol," she captioned the photo, giving a nod to Sakura Haruno, a fictional character from the popular anime show Naruto, who is known for her pink hair.
After winning the Australian Open on Saturday, Osaka, who is half-Haitian and half-Japanese, said she planned to celebrate by watching "some anime... maybe (eat) pizza... and go to sleep." Seems like the athlete, who grew up reading manga and watching anime, now has the perfect hair for the activity.
Fans and celebrities shared how much they loved the new look and confirmed Osaka did indeed outdo the character.
"U wore it better," track star Usain Bolt declared.
Big sister and fellow tennis player Mari Osaka exclaimed, "Ohhhhhhhhhhhh damnnnnn."
"Oh my god you look lovely, i’m screaming in pink," a fan said.
"I’m living for this!" someone wrote
"Has anyone told you that pink looks BOMB on you?" Another person added.
The four-time Grand Slam champion is not only known for her skills on the court, but also for her style, which she often utilizes to send a message, particularly around social justice issues and to celebrate her heritage. Osaka has also been an ambassador for several fashion brands like Levi's and Louis Vuitton.
In January, Osaka spoke with Harper's Bazaar about what inspires her style.
"I enjoy fashion, and part of putting together my looks on and off the court involves accessories and watches," she explained. "It's a subtle addition to an outfit but something I think rounds out a look. For me, accessories are an opportunity to be bolder and really elevate a look, so I like unique designs that draw people's attention...On the court, my look is about ease of movement, not something that feels too confined or distracts from my play. Off the court, I will go for a more oversized or fashion-forward look. Either way, I love to wear bright colors and statement pieces when I can."
For her cover spread for Vogue's January 2021 issue, she also admitted that she truly has a passion for fashion.
"Fashion and design are such creative outlets for me, and it’s become my favorite way to express myself, which is why it’s such a liberating experience when I collaborate with brands,” she said. “Mixing and matching and finding what works together is so fun and cool. I love to push the limits.”
