Movie Writer Defends Decision to Make Oceangate Tragedy Film
Movie makers are standing by the decision to turn the OceanGate Titan submersible tragedy into a movie.
After MindRiot Entertainment announced a docuseries based on OceanGate and the Titanic-bound submersible disaster, news broke this week that the production company will also be turning the story into a fiction project, co-produced by Black-ish executive producer, E. Brian Dobbins.
The movie is expected to cover the entire scope of the tragedy that occurred back in June, when five passengers vanished on board the Titan submersible as it was headed for the wreckage site of the Titanic.
After a massive five-day search to find the missing craft, debris from the Titan was discovered near the Titanic on June 22. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed shortly after that the submersible imploded during its voyage, killing all of its passengers.
“The Titan Tragedy is yet another example of a misinformed and quick-to-pounce system, in this case, our nonstop, 24-7 media cycle that convicts and ruins the lives of so many people without any due process," said one of the film's co-writers Jonathan Keasey, per Deadline.
He went on to say, "Our film will not only honor all those involved in the submersible tragedy, and their families, but the feature will serve as a vessel that also addresses a more macro concern about the nature of media today."
"Truth is all that matters," Keasey continued, claiming that "the world has a right to know the truth, always, not the salacious bait crammed down our throats by those seeking their five minutes of fame."
"Life is not black and white. It’s complicated. There’s nuance. Always nuance," he concluded.
According to Deadline, there is not much known about the upcoming project just yet, except that it has currently been given the same title as the upcoming OceanGate docuseries, Salvaged.
