Move Over Meat Dress! There’s Now a Gown Made of Fruits & Grains

Lady Gaga’s meat dress that she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2010 took the intersection of food and fashion to the next level. Designed by Franc Fernandez, the look was made out of real slabs of beef. Now, a fellow designer for Mother Monster has taken a cue from the iconic cow-derived ensemble and made a gown from grains and fruit.

Tess Daly, a TV host in the United Kingdom for their Strictly Come Dancing (their equivalent of Dancing With the Stars), collaborated with fashion designer Petra Storrs to create a frock from cereal ingredients. Daly serves as an ambassador for Kellogg’s and to celebrate the launch of her own Special K variety, she obviously needed an outfit made of the cereal’s ingredients to match.

“I was amazed at the result Petra achieved — I never dreamed she’d create something so uniquely beautiful,” Daly said. "To have been allowed a hand in the design process was a great experience — I love fashion, and I love food — what a perfect combination of the two!“

Four thousand stalks of braided wheat structured the shoulders, bodice, and skirt and 500 almonds, hand-sewn together, are interspersed throughout. The train’s composed of 450 red apples and flowers were tastefully placed for decoration, not eating.

"I’ve created some weird and wonderful things in my time but to make a dress 100 percent out of the ingredients of a cereal recipe was a huge challenge and involved a lot of hard work,” Storrs said. “Thankfully Tess and I shared a vision of what we wanted to achieve and it was great working with her to achieve this stunning result.”
