Moms Ski Free on Mother's Day at Canadian Resort
At Banff Sunshine Village in Canada, moms ski and ride for free on Mother’s Day.
To thank all the incredible moms out there, Sunshine is "offering free skiing to all moms (including moms to be!)." The resort urges moms to get tickets at the ticket window, available May 12th, 2024 only. See below.
We checked in with Director of Brand and Communications Kendra Scurfield, who shared why this Mother's Day tradition is so special.
"Being a family resort, we want to be a place where our families can get outside, celebrate, and make core memories together. Our Mother's Day Ski For Free event has actually been going on for probably close to a decade, and it's a way to say thanks to everyone for sharing their love of the outdoors. It just encourages them as to be more active. This year, we have opened it up to all mothers, including moms who are pregnant, moms who have unfortunately lost a child or struggle with infertility, etc."
"It's a way to say thank you, Mom, for everything you do."
"There's also been data that supports that the activities that our parents, primarily our mother, gets us into, are the ones we can do as a family together. There are sociological benefits to it, relationship building, as well as a longevity to those activities that we're getting into at a young age with your parents."
We asked Kendra how mothers can prove their motherly status to Sunshine. She replied, "it can be as simple as saying your child's name. It can be showing a photo of you with your child. We're going to be pretty open with it."
She did admit that the resort expects people to be honest and forthright with them, like an honor code.
We asked what the reactions have been to the event, and she said, "people are very excited."
She also relayed that she herself is a newer mom. "My son is now 3, and I'm so very fortunate that I get to be able to make more memories with him and share my love of skiing with him and begin to relive some of my first childhood memories."
However, this year's Mother Day is bittersweet to Kendra, as it is the last day to ride Angel Express. The high speed quad was constructed when she was just 3 years old, in the '88, '89 season.
She remembers riding up it with her dad and wearing a little nose protector and thinking how cool it was.
She told us, "we will have our last flight on Angel Express on Mother's Day. We will be replacing that chair, and we are going to be selling our current chair to create a sustainable life cycle for the chairlift."
Eagle Express will be replaced with a high speed 6 passenger heated level chair with direct drive.
Ending on a high note, Kendra reminded us of the Mother's Day brunch on Sunday.
Kendra said, "we would love to set a record for the most amount of moms being with their kids, whether it's multigenerational, whether it's grandmas, kiddos, it would be a cool to see."
