The moment Beyoncé and Jay-Z give this student a $100K scholarship may move you to tears
What does it look like when a deserving student gets a $100,000 scholarship from Beyoncé and Jay-Z? Watch the video above — and try not to tear up.
Emily Garay and her friends from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade went to see the Carters in concert in September, and the night did not go as expected — in the best way possible. Garay’s emotional reaction to winning the scholarship from BeyGood and the Shawn Carter Foundation is pure joy. The generous gift moves Garay one huge step closer to fulfilling her dream of becoming a police officer. Her future plans? To get a master’s in criminology from Florida International University as well as a master’s in marketing, she told Yahoo Lifestyle.
Before the huge gift from Bey and Jay, Garay and her parents, who are from Colombia and Nicaragua, were worried that they wouldn’t have the means to pay for her college. “My mom was thinking of working two jobs. My dad, he was just stressing,” she told CBS Miami.
The scholarship from the power couple, aka Garay’s “angels,” was the perfect surprise: “As a Latina, it’s really hard to get opportunities like this, especially as a woman, and it meant the world to me,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z weren’t the only ones in a giving mood. Miami’s own DJ Khaled matched the scholarship, giving 17-year-old Jonathon Burgos $100,000. Burgos plans to become an electrical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Nominated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, the two deserving students were selected based on their 3.0 (or better) grade point average, overall motivation, and future goals. Garay joined the club when she was 9 years old. “They have taught me so many things that have been pivotal throughout my childhood,” she said.
Bey and Jay have awarded $100,000 scholarships at each of the cities on their “On the Run II” tour, including San Diego and Pasadena, Calif.; New Orleans; Houston; and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour wraps Oct. 4 in Seattle.
