Mom Refuses to Let Daughter Attend Daycare with Overweight Teachers

The Doctors discuss a story from the UK about a mother that reportedly refuses to allow her daughter to attend a daycare with overweight teachers.

The mom reportedly claimed that she felt uneasy seeing an overweight teacher play with her 2-year-old and she questioned if the overweight staff members would have fast enough reflexes if a child was in a dangerous situation.

Dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra says, "I think we have to just call this what this is, this is just fat-shaming."

Attorney and child advocate Areva Martin notes that in America 49 states do not protect employees against fat discrimination, with only Michigan offering protections against this type of discrimination. She feels this type of behavior feeds into fat discrimination.

ER physician Dr. Travis Stork says the idea that a thin teacher at a daycare facility somehow makes your child safer is "illogical and unfair."

The Doctors note that fat-shaming is never the right approach to dealing with being overweight and say it can lead to even unhealthier behaviors for people who are overweight.
