The first time I saw the Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil a few years ago, I wanted it. Between the luxurious packaging and natural ingredients, what’s not to want? As a self-proclaimed hair oil connoisseur (ok, fine—some may call me a hoarder), I held off on getting another one till I got through more of the stash I had waiting in my vanity drawers.

Fast-forward to 2023, and I couldn’t go a couple of days without seeing the Gisou oil on my social media feed. I see it in nearly every “What’s in my bag” video and on the bathroom counters of all my girlfriends. As someone with dry, curly, and extremely frizzy hair, the mass popularity actually made me more apprehensive about trying it. After one particularly humid trip to India on which I deleted every frizzy-haired picture taken of me, I figured it was time to try something new.

As I put the slight nonconformist in me aside, I first tried the oil in a low-stakes situation by using it to tame baby hairs and frizz for a sleek bun at a hot Pilates class. After the class, I was shocked to see that my hair looked just as slicked-back as it had when I’d initially styled it pre-workout. My hair also felt extremely soft; other oils I’ve tried in the past left my hair feeling weighed-down and sticky.

The hair oil is formulated with honey, coconut oil, and almond oil to condition, strengthen, and smooth hair. I can attest to all of those benefits. Since first using it, I’ve incorporated the oil into many steps in my haircare routine. I massage it into my scalp as an intensive pre-wash treatment, slip it onto wet hair as a leave-in conditioner, and put it on dry ends to make them look more healthy. When I wash it out after oiling my scalp, my hair feels significantly softer and has far less frizz. I travel frequently, and stubbornly refuse to check in a bag, so it’s the perfect multitasking product to pack in my toiletry case.

At $46, it’s not exactly cheap, but I can say that I used the oil almost daily for three months before running out of the 1.7-ounce bottle. I’ll use one full dropper for a scalp massage, and just three to four drops when smoothing my tips or frizz. While I have curly hair, it seems to benefit nearly every hair type. My mom borrowed some of it from me on our last family vacation, and loved using it on her ultra-sensitive scalp and straight hair, too.
