MASSILLON ? Twenty-three Washington High School senior boys and girls vying for the titles of Outstanding Senior Boy and Miss Massillonian put their best foot forward Thursday during the annual formal assembly.
Dressed in gowns and tuxedos, the students answered a random question in front of their peers, family and a panel of judges.
The formal assembly was the next step on their journey to become one of the Tigers who have won the title over the past 85 years.
After the assembly, the seniors met with the judges, who Beth Starrett Hirschman, Israel Robinson, Amy Sabino, Andy Cocklin and James Waters II, at the Massillon Woman's Club.
Candidates were announced in December during the Rose Assembly. This year, 50 students vied for the final coveted spots.
The longstanding tradition dates back to when Carol Bell was selected by Bing Crosby as the school’s first Miss Massillonian. Outstanding Senior Boy was added years later.
Seniors eligible for the honor must maintain a 3.3 grade-point average.
Those chosen are selected based on involvement in extracurricular activities throughout their high school career, a vote by fellow seniors and an essay.
The winner of the titles will be announced during the end-of-the-year awards ceremony in May.
