Michael J. Fox was only 29 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991. At the time, he had just one child, his son Sam, and Sam was only 2 years old. Fox has been open about how supportive his children have been during his ongoing battle with the disease.
In 2022, he revealed, “My youngest [children] never knew me without Parkinson's. Sam was 2 or 3 when I was diagnosed. So, they never knew anything else. And there's a certain latitude you have to give someone who has Parkinson's. You can choose how nice to be and how much to do—and how much to know not to do. That's all about empathy."
All of his children attended the Governors Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Nov. 19, 2022, to watch their dad accept the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic efforts with respect to Parkinson's research. They could be seen looking proud in the audience.
Though the father-of-four has been very open about how supportive his children have been, his kids tend to shy away from the spotlight and have not been very open in the press about their father’s struggle with Parkinson’s. That may change, however, as all four children participated in the 2023 Apple TV+ movie Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.
