Michael B. Jordan Had to Buy a Whole New Wardrobe After Bulking Up for ‘Black Panther’
Coach celebrated its 75th anniversary last week with a fashion show — followed by an epic afterparty.
Set inside New York’s Pier 94, which had been transformed to look like a roadside motel parking lot on a starry night, you couldn’t help but feel as if you were on-set for a cool Hollywood film. Coincidentally, the front row was filled with more stars than that makeshift night sky, including Drew Barrymore, Zo? Kravitz, Emma Roberts, and Michael B. Jordan.
We caught up with superstar Jordan, who next stars in Black Panther, about his first memory of the brand, buying a new wardrobe after bulking up for work, and his gift-giving philosophy. Read below for more!
Yahoo Style: Growing up, did you own anything from Coach?
Michael B. Jordan: I personally never owned any Coach items, but I had an uncle who was a flight attendant, and he always traveled. So he would always carry bags and luggage from Coach.
You put on muscle for Creed and for your upcoming role as supervillain Erik Killmonger in Black Panther. Did you have to buy a completely new wardrobe?
Yeah, I did. I find myself wearing nothing but workout clothes most of the time. My jeans are little, and I’m not as skinny as I used to be, so I have to get bigger sizes now since my thighs are getting bigger. My shirts and jackets don’t quite fit the right way anymore, either, so I kind of had to get a new wardrobe.
Which is fun?
Which is kind of fun! Although my stylist Jeff Kim isn’t too happy with all the alterations for the suits I’ll be squeezing [into] in the next couple of months. But it’s going to be worth it!
The holidays are coming up. Are there any favorite go-to spots where you love to do your holiday shopping?
For me, it’s hard to go shopping, so I usually go online.
What is your gift-giving philosophy?
My family actually isn’t really gift oriented because we believe in giving all year round. For us, it’s not about just buying a gift to get something. We like our gifts to have thought and meaning. When the holidays come around, it’s more about spending time with the family and reinforcing what’s really important to us.
