Meghan Markle's dad shares how Prince Harry asked for her hand in marriage — and why they disagree on Trump
Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, spoke out on Monday about the moment Prince Harry asked him for his daughter’s hand in marriage.
The 73-year-old former lighting director, who moved to Mexico after filing for bankruptcy, appeared on Good Morning Britain and talked about the phone call he had with the royal.
“Harry asked for her hand on the phone, and I said: ‘You are a gentleman. Promise me you will never raise your hand against my daughter, and of course I will grant you my permission,’” he said.
During the segment, Markle — who missed the royal wedding because of health concerns — added that he “absolutely wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle,” but that he was recovering from heart surgery.
Just hours after revealing that he wouldn’t be attending the May 19 nuptials, he was admitted to a hospital for heart surgery, where he reportedly had three stents placed in his blood vessels after suffering a heart attack.
Prince Charles stepped in to take over Markle’s duties and ended up walking Meghan down the aisle.
The duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, was the only member of her family in attendance on the day.
Markle said during the interview that he has a good relationship with his new son-in-law, Prince Harry.
But when it comes to politics, he shared they may not necessarily see eye to eye on a particular topic.
“Our conversation was I was complaining I didn’t like Donald Trump,” Markle shared of one conversation with the royal. “He said, ‘Give Donald Trump a chance.’ I sort of disagreed with that.”
Meanwhile, sources tell the Daily Mail‘s royal correspondent that Markle was paid for the interview, which was evidently not cleared by Kensington Palace.
Thomas Markle was paid 'a few thousand pounds' for his interview with @GMB today. There was no Kensington Palace approval for this. He is entitled to accept payment, of course, but it does raise questions about his ongoing relationship with daughter Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.
