Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Reportedly Wanted to Live in Windsor Castle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have settled in to life at Frogmore Cottage with their newborn son Archie, but the newly renovated home within the grounds of Frogmore House reportedly wasn't the Sussex family's first choice of residence.

Earlier this week, the Sunday Times reported that Harry and Meghan initially wanted to live at Windsor Castle with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

"The couple are understood to have set their hearts at first on Windsor Castle, and are believed to have asked the Queen if living quarters could be made available after their marriage," reads the report by Roya Nikkhah. But the Queen nixed that idea, and so Frogmore Cottage received a $3.05 million makeover for the Sussexes.

Hugo Vickers, who has written a number of biographies about the royal family, offered insight into why the British monarch would have suggested Harry and Meghan move in to Frogmore Cottage as opposed to the castle.

"There are empty bedrooms and suites in the private apartments which the Sussexes may have had their eye on, or perhaps some former living quarters in the castle grounds converted into other things. But I can see how it might not be entirely appropriate to have a young family living there," he said.

Even though they aren't living in the Castle now, the town of Windsor has proven to be a place of deep significance for Harry and Meghan.

"As with all members of the Royal Family, Windsor is a very special place for Prince Harry and he and Ms. Markle have regularly spent time there over the last year and a half," reads a statement released by Kensington Palace ahead of the Sussexes' 2018 wedding.

"Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are delighted that the beautiful grounds of Windsor Castle will be where they begin their lives together as a married couple."
