Meghan Markle just took one major step on her path to becoming a member of the royal family.
According to People, Markle took part in a baptism ceremony on Tuesday evening, which means she’s now officially a member of the Church of England. According to the Daily Mail, fiancé Prince Harry was by her side the entire time.
The service reportedly took just 45 minutes and was also attended by Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. According to Metro, two other people were in attendance as Markle’s “sponsors,” though they remained unnamed.
The service itself, People reported, was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, in the Royal Chapel at St. James’s Palace in London. According to CNN, Markle personally asked Welby to perform the ceremony. The two are allegedly developing a close bond as he has been providing her with guidance on the rites and sacraments of the Church of England in recent weeks.
Following the baptism, Markle was immediately confirmed, which means she can now take part in the Holy Communion alongside Prince Harry.
As CNN further reported, Markle’s baptism was not compulsory. Instead, Markle, who was brought up Protestant, decided to convert and announced her intention to do so at the time of her engagement.
Markle isn’t the only royal bride to enter the Church of England for love: While Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, was baptized as a child, she was confirmed into the Church shortly before her wedding to Prince William in 2011.
Now that the baptism is over it can only be assumed that Markle will turn her attention to the last-minute details of planning the wedding of the year.
