Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird Are Engaged
They met at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Soccer player Megan Rapinoe and basketball star Sue Bird are engaged. Bird announced the news on Instagram, sharing a photo of Rapinoe on one knee, slipping a ring on her finger. Without a caption (Bird was uncharacteristically quiet about the details), it's tough to tell where the two are, though the photo reveals that they're enjoying very nice seaside environs. The two have been dating for four years after meeting at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
People notes that Rapinoe may have asked Bird to marry her during a birthday trip earlier this month. Bird turned 40 back on October 16. Rapinoe plays for both the United States Women's National Soccer Team and Seattle's National Women's Soccer League team, OL Reign. Bird plays for Seattle's WNBA team, the Seattle Storm, and USA Basketball.

In an interview with People last year, Rapinoe said that she and Bird are "huge fans of each other."
"I have become, like, a Seattle Storm number one superfan, of course," Rapinoe said. "I think it is just the understanding of what we have to go through and the appreciation of, you know, each other’s skills and lives is really special. And in the same sense, we are just normal to each other. Which is really nice. Like, neither of us are like, 'Oh wow you are the best person that has ever played basketball.' Which she is!"

Rapinoe also said that she loved being with an athlete and that it wasn't weird for either one of them. In fact, she said that being a fan and a WAG (soccer slang for "wives and girlfriends") was actually pretty fun.
"I love being a WAG and a superfan," she said. "I think it’s AMAZING and to be able to, you know, watch your partner exceed and excel and be exactly who they are in a public forum. That's pretty special."
