Matthew Perry Will Remove Keanu Reeves References From Memoir's Future Editions
Matthew Perry won't include his controversial Keanu Reeves reference in new editions of his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
During a panel at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, the Friends alum shared his plans to revise this section of the memoir.
"I said a stupid thing. It was a mean thing to do," Perry admitted, according to The LA Times. He added, "I pulled his name because I live on the same street. I've apologized publicly to him. Any future versions of the book will not have his name in it."
Perry said that though he gave a public apology, he has yet to apologize to the John Wick star in person. However, he plans to do so. "If I run into the guy, I'll apologize. It was just stupid."
In his memoir, Perry seemingly questioned Reeves' acting talents. In a chapter about his late friend River Phoenix, he wrote, "River was a beautiful man, inside and out—too beautiful for this world, it turned out. It always seems to be the really talented guys who go down. Why is it that the original thinkers like River Pheonix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?"
When Perry issued an apology, he explained that he's "actually a big fan of Keanu" and "just chose a random name."
In addition to speaking about the memoir update at the Festival of Book, Perry addressed criticism of Friends not being diverse enough.
"It was a different time. Nobody talked about diversity," he said, adding that these days diversity is a "huge issue" and it's "the right thing to do."
