'Mandalorian' Fans Are Asking About Baby Yoda's Connection to Yoda in 'Star Wars'
When season one of The Mandalorian first hit Disney+ last November, all anyone could talk about was The Child, a.k.a. Baby Yoda.
One year later, not much has changed. Even though only one episode of The Mandalorian season 2 has been released so far, folks are still Googling the small-but-mighty sentient to learn more about its mysterious background. Not surprisingly, one of the main questions folks have about Baby Yoda revolves around its relationship to the Jedi Grand Master Yoda fans came to know and love in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Given Baby Yoda's resemblance to Jedi Yoda, it's tempting to think the two might be the same character depicted in different time periods — but the truth is a bit more complicated.
Is Baby Yoda the Same Yoda From Star Wars?
Long story short, Baby Yoda and Master Yoda are not the same character, though they do belong to the same Force-sensitive species. We know this because The Mandalorian takes place after the original trilogy of films (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) and before the new trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker). Given that Master Yoda dies in Return of the Jedi, it obviously wouldn't make sense chronologically for Baby Yoda to be the Jedi legend.
What's more, The Mandalorian creator, Jon Favreau, confirmed to USA Today that they are not the same Yoda. While also citing the Disney+ show's timeline as the reason, Jon further explained that "fans of the original trilogy will remember that Yoda not only passes away but actually disappears. So Yoda exists as a Force Ghost."
Although they're not the same person, the possibility does remain that the two Yodas are related in some way. After all, given that Baby Yoda is 50 years old as an infant, it's possible their lives overlapped at some point.
"Well, now you're getting into spoilers," Jon told USA Today when asked about a possible connection between the two. "I can't say. But there are a lot of theories about that."
And so, the Baby Yoda mystery continues.
