Maisie Williams Just Dished on Filming Arya and Gendry’s Crazy Sex Scene
Gendry and Arya had sex during Sunday night’s Game of Thrones, causing Twitter to fully melt down.
Maisie Williams just opened up about filming the scene and getting naked on camera for the first time ever.
A lot happened during Sunday night’s Game of Thrones, including an entire conversation about Tormund being breastfed by a giant for three months (help). But the most jaw-dropping scene of the night? When Arya and Gendry had hot forge sex. The moment went down thanks to Arya realizing she didn’t want to die a virgin and basically consisted of our girl grilling Gendry about how many times he’s had sex, telling him to take off his own pants, and pouncing on him.
So, what was the scene like to film? For starters, Maisie says, “At first, I thought it was a prank.” And then she was all, “I need to go to the gym.” But ultimately, it was no big deal and everyone was very respectful.
“In the beginning, everyone was really respectful,” Maisie told Entertainment Weekly. “No one wants to make you feel uncomfortable, which kind of makes you feel more uncomfortable because no one wants to look at anything that they shouldn’t look at, which in turn makes you feel like you look awful because everyone is kind of like [*averts eyes*]. You want people to act more normal.”
She adds, “By the end, we’re rushing to finish the scene and David is going, ‘Okay, you’re going to come in and do this and do that and, great, take your top off’-and then walked off. And I’m like…‘Okay. Let’s do it.’”
By the way, Maisie got to have full control of how much skin she wanted to show, saying that the showrunners let her decide. “David and Dan were like: ‘You can show as much or as little as you want,’” she explains. “So I kept myself pretty private. I don’t think it’s important for Arya to flash. This beat isn’t really about that. And everybody else has already done it on the show, so….”
Meanwhile, Joe Dempsie (Gendry) thinks filming the scene was all kinds of weird. “It’s obviously slightly strange for me because I’ve known Maisie since she was 11, 12 years old,” he says. “At the same time, I don’t want to be patronizing toward Maisie-she’s a 20-year-old woman. So we just had a lot of fun with it.”
P.S. Maisie originally learned about the scene from her best friend Sophie Turner, who says she “called Maisie and was like: ‘Have you read it yet?’ And she’s like, ‘I’m midway through episode 1.’ And I’m like: ‘This scene, this page, read it! This is awesome!’ She was very happy.”
