Lupita Nyong'o, Meryl Streep, and Laura Dern rock the most surprising accessory at the Oscars
On Oscar Sunday, an unexpected item became the “it” accessory of the night — and it wasn’t Nicole Kidman‘s sparkling Harry Winston chandelier earrings or Helen Mirren‘s royal sapphire and diamond collar necklace. Instead, it was Lupita Nyong’o‘s black cat-eye reading glasses.
When Nyong’o stepped out onstage to present the Oscar for Best Production Design with Kumail Nanjiani, she added a sleek pair of cat-eye optical frames to accompany her custom Vibranium by Versace gold dress to (we assume) clearly read the teleprompter. For those wondering, Nyong’o’s frames were designed by Andy Wolf, an Austrian designer whose fan base includes model Bella Hadid.
Twitter users could not stop raving about Nyong’o’s eyeglasses. Comedian Abbi Crutchfield posted: “Unlike Superman Lupita Nyong’o becomes a hero once she puts ON glasses. #Slay #Oscars.” Another user, Talia, writes: “Lupita in glasses is, hands down, the absolute highlight of this year’s Oscars.”
This isn’t the first time Nyong’o has sported eye-catching glasses on an awards stage. In fact, back in 2016, one Twitter user was inspired enough to create an account dedicated to all of the star’s special eyewear moments, appropriately called Lupita’s Glasses. One post from the account reads, “Lasik is shook. Lupita’s glasses are BACK #oscars.”
But the Black Panther star was just one of many who sported chic optical frames on Hollywood’s most glamorous night of the year.
Big Little Lies star Laura Dern sported her own black frames when presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature while wearing a minimalist gown by Calvin Klein by Appointment. Meryl Streep, who has been wearing glasses on the red carpet for years, wore an oval pair by Alain Mikli with her red Dior dress for the special night.
The trend didn’t only include women. Gary Oldman, who took home the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour, wore his signature pair of thick black acetate frames. Jordan Peele, who made history as the first black writer to win Best Original Screenplay, wore a pair of two-toned, rectangular glasses with his crisp white tux. Comedian Dave Chappelle looked sharp wearing a pair of oversize, amber-hued glasses.
It’s safe to assume that many (if not all) the glasses worn on Sunday night were for practical purposes, but it also goes to show how glasses can still serve as a stylish accessory, even when wearing a gown or tux — just as long as you have the right pair.
