My Current Drink Crush: Haus Bitter Clove
Why This Drink Matters: As part of the rising wellness-centric low-proof cocktail trend, Haus is a lower-ABV apéritif that allows consumers to hang out and drink socially ?— without getting hungover. It's a palate primer, it offers a smarter way to imbibe, and it's made with natural ingredients.
An alternative to other more well-known (and often sugar-loaded) European apéritif giants like Aperol, Lillet, or St. Germain, this Haus is built quite differently. A small, direct-to-consumer American brand created by a husband-and-wife duo in California, Haus features minimalist packaging, a simple and natural ingredient list, and a retro vibe that caters to a new generation of drinkers. Its 15% ABV means you can easily have a few glasses without the consequences of a hangover the next day,
Apéritif culture is making a big comeback, and Haus is leading the way.
How We Met: Over the summer, I met Citrus Flower. Soft, floral, and blonde, Citrus Flower was very sweet, but she wasn't really my drink. I got along with her just fine and found her upbeat nature to be refreshing ... but if I'm being honest, I tend to gravitate towards moodier folks. She would always order prosecco. All I wanted was whiskey.
This fall, I met her older brother Bitter Clove, and we kind of understood each other right away. Dark amber in color and bitter around the edges, he made me feel more at home. He arrived at my front door without any gimmicks or pleasantries, so I reached for two rocks glasses and ice right away.
In the glass, he glimmered with a burnt-orange hue, and I smelled spicy notes of ginger, cloves, and star anise. A subtle bitterness on the tongue and then the warmth followed, reminding me of some of my favorite whiskies, leaves on the ground, and cold temperatures. I felt a warm buzz that made me want a second sip. I knew I had found my new drink.
Tasting Notes: Bitter Clove is earthy, slightly spicy, and bittersweet. This is an apéritif made with the whiskey and amaro lover in mind. The main tasting notes are star anise, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaf, and artichoke leaf.
Note: Haus is also available in two other flavors: Citrus Flower (lemon/elderberry/hibiscus) and Rose Rosé (a seasonal summer variety currently sold out). All three flavors are special.
