Local teen takes flight pursuing pilot's license

Sep. 13—For most, piloting a plane solo is an impossible task. But for one local teenager, it's a dream he intends to accomplish very soon.

Troy High School junior Lane Hall has already received his driver's license. His next goal is to earn his private pilot's license.

While considering possible career choices after graduation, Hall knew he didn't want to work in an office. Instead, he'd prefer his desk to be 18,000 feet in the sky.

"I didn't really want a desk job or anything or to go into the labor union," Hall said. "So I was just looking around and it caught my eye and I decided to pursue a career into it, hopefully."

On average, Hall spends eight hours a week working to earn his license. For every hour he spends flying, he studies for three hours. This studying includes air traffic patterns, altitudes, ground school and more.

Hall is currently working toward getting a private pilot's license, but said he may someday enlist in the military to hone the skills associated with both enlisting and flying.

"It's teaching me very good time management, which is good if I want to go into college or pursue any other career for some reason," he said. "Also discipline. You gotta work hard, and it's not just going to be given to you."
