Lizzo Used Her Powerful Billboard Music Awards Acceptance Speech to Remind Her Fans to Vote
Lizzo took home the 2020 Billboard Music Award for Top Song Sales Artist.
In her speech, she reminded viewers about the importance of letting their voices be heard by voting in the upcoming election.
Despite the absolute dumpster fire that is 2020, Lizzo is (1) still out here winning awards and (2) reminding her fans that yes, they can affect change. At tonight's Billboard Music Awards, Lizzo managed to do both at once (we love a multitasker!), using her Top Song Sales Artist acceptance speech to tell viewers to fight suppression and make their voices heard by voting in the November election.
Lizzo said:
"I just want to say thank you to Billboard, thank you to Atlantic, thank you to Team Lizzo, thank you to everyone who listened to my music and supported me. I just wanted to say I've been thinking abut suppression and the voices that refused to be suppressed, and I wonder would I be standing here right now if it weren't for the big Black women who refused to have their voices be suppressed. I just wanted to say right now if you are at home watching this and you are thinking about changing yourself to feel worthy, this is your sign to remain true to who you are.
Lemme tell y'all something: When people try to suppress something, it's normally because that thing holds power. They're afraid of your power. There's power in who you are. There's power in your voice. So whether it's through music, protest, or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed. Thank you so much to Billboard. I love y'all. God bless, y'all."
