Liam Hemsworth Couldn’t Escape Miley Cyrus Prior to Their Reconciliation
Home is where the Miley is—at least for Liam Hemsworth. During the high-profile couple’s broken engagement in 2013, the actor wanted to clear his mind of his then-ex, Miley Cyrus, but many unexpected circumstances would constantly point back to the Grammy winner.
“When Liam—he’s my boyfriend now—and I broke up for a minute, he wanted to get away from me,” Cyrus recalled in a no-holds-barred interview with Howard Stern on his Sirius XM show this week. “He wanted to go to Malibu, and bought this house… He didn’t know it was the house I recorded my first album in!”
The album, Breakout, was indeed a hit. The couple broke off their engagement in late 2013, only to reconcile at the beginning of 2016. Both have spoken out previously about how difficult yet necessary it was during that time period to be apart—well, sort of.
“The person [who sold the house] hid all the plaques in the garage, so [Liam] would still buy the house,” Cyrus continued to Stern. “So then he went to move in and he was like ‘F**k, I can’t get away.”
Despite the strong feelings then, the two have since reconciled and live together in that same home in Malibu. In fact, the spot inspired Cyrus’ latest hit “Malibu,” which is a nod to Hemsworth and their relationship. The actor even shot the cover artwork for the single.
“So now that we’re back together, my song ‘Malibu’ is about the house that I live in, in Malibu, which is where I recorded my first album,” Cyrus confirmed. Prior to the release of Cyrus’ latest album, Younger Now, the singer did not play it for her fiance. “I put this dude through so much s**t,” she said. “He’ll tell me something and then, all of the sudden, it’s in one of my songs.” Hence, why she didn’t play the record for Hemsworth prior to its release. “He said he bought the album and was going to go take a shower and listen,” Cyrus said of the day it came out. “And I’m like, ‘Maybe, don’t.”
Nevertheless, despite their crazy work schedules and A-list status, Cyrus told Stern that the actor remains “the most normal, normal part of my life.”
