The LG V30 Smartphone Debuts With a Killer Camera and Audio Setup
LG took the wraps off its range-topping V30 smartphone at a press conference during IFA in Berlin. Stylish, powerful, and waterproof, the newcomer aims to deliver the best camera and audio experience in the business. The LG V30 will hit the shelves of all major carriers in the United States in the coming weeks.
Top-Tier Specs
In a manner befitting a high-end Android smartphone, the LG V30 comes with a long list of cutting-edge specs, headed by an incredibly vibrant 6-inch QHD+ (2,880 by 1,440 pixels) OLED display. The slightly curved display has incredibly small bezels, which result in a high screen-to-body ratio.
Unlike past LG V-series models, the latest iteration lacks a secondary display above its main screen. As a nod to the feature, the custom Android interface of the LG V30 has a floating dock with customizable shortcuts.
The latter is a big deal for LG, as it finally rivals the Super AMOLED displays found in Samsung's top-tier smartphones. It also ensures that the LG V30 is compatible with Google's Daydream VR headsets.
Another LG V30 tech bit worth getting excited about is the dual camera setup, which consists of a 16 MP regular sensor and a 13 MP one sitting behind a wide-angle lens. The 16 MP main snapper has a class-leading f/1.6 aperture, which all but guarantees that the phone will be a leader in low-light photography.
The video capture capabilities of the LG V30 are also incredibly rich in features. They include the ability to smoothly zoom in on objects in a cinematic fashion, and it offers a wide selection of movie-inspired filters. Users will have the option to edit and merge videos via a powerful built-in editor.
And then there's the audio tech. With a built-in Hi-Fi Quad DAC and a standard audio jack on board, the LG V30 can power even pro-grade, high-impedance headsets, allowing you to enjoy audiophile-grade content on the go.
The LG V30 has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance just like the LG G6. Being a member of the V-series, the smartphone has passed military-grade durability tests.
The rest of the phone's specs are standard high-end Android fare. They include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of expandable memory. The LG V30 has a 3,300 mAh battery with support for fast charging (via USB-C). Wireless charging is also on board.
Hands-On Impressions
LG has complemented the cutting-edge specs of the V30 with refined, if slightly familiar, design (you can easily mistake it for a Samsung Galaxy S8 at a quick glance). The phone feels great in hand, thanks to a pleasantly solid metal frame and complete lack of edges.
The hardware features of the LG V30 are truly worth your attention. The dual camera with fast aperture could well be the best on any phone, while the high-end audio chip promises to make the phone the go-to option for on-the-go audiophiles. We'll explore all the features in-depth when we review the LG V30 in the coming weeks.
