Labor Day Shark Attacks at Florida Beach Send Two People to the Hospital

Two people suffered shark-inflicted injuries at Florida's Ponce Inlet on Monday.

According to WFLA News, a surfer "in his 30s was bitten on his left hand while surfing near the Ponce Inlet Jetty."

The other victim was a 37-year-old woman who was standing in waste-deep water when a shark bit her right foot.

WFLA News captioned the post above:

"2 bitten by shark at same Florida beach, officials say."

According to WFLA, the surfer "denied medical care at the beach and chose to drive himself to the hospital. His injuries were described as non-life threatening."

Meanwhile, the woman "was treated by paramedics at the beach before she was rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries."

Ponce Inlet is located in Volusia County, a hot spot for shark attacks.

In July, we reported that two surfers were attacked by sharks in one weekend at New Smyrna Beach, also in Volusia County.

The county has been dubbed “the shark bite capital of the world" by the the International Shark Attack File, the world's only scientifically documented, comprehensive database of all known shark attacks.

According to the database, Volusia County has had 343 unprovoked shark attacks since 1882, more than double Florida's Brevard County at 156 and Palm Beach at 82.

While we've recently reported numerous no-contact shark encounters, several shark attacks have resulted in injuries.

An Australian surfer suffered a great white shark attack in late August that resulted in the loss of his leg.

In New York earlier this summer, two shark attacks took place on the same day, but at different beaches.
