Kristen Stewart 'saved makeup artists' from sexual misconduct on movie sets
Actress Kristen Stewart made her first remarks about the Harvey Weinstein scandal that’s raised the roof on sexual misconduct in the film industry at the Elle Woman in Hollywood Awards on Monday night. Stewart, who introduced close friend and honoree Riley Keough, took her time on stage to share a poignant reminder that sexual predation reaches far beyond actors and directors.
“I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve saved makeup artists,” said Stewart, who read a quick blurb off her iPhone before diving into her teleprompter speech. “Because it trickles down to makeup artists, camera assistants, from DPs [directors of photography] that are like ‘Hey, babe.’”
“It happens on lesser scales too,” Stewart continued. “When I say ‘saved’, I mean [I’ve] momentarily been like ‘Hey. Don’t, f***er.’ And then they are embarrassed for one second and then it keeps going every single day.”
“So I would say, ‘Let’s be aware of this on every level,'” Stewart continued. “I would tell you that those girls are as duct-taped as one could possibly be because they are in fear of getting their next job, as every actress [is] too.”
Though she didn’t mention Harvey Weinstein by name during her remarks, Stewart had choice words for the now infamous studio head who once said he persuaded the actress to meet with a Saudi prince for 15 minutes to raise $500,000 for Hurrican Sandy relief efforts.
“I just want to express how thankful I am to hear what is typically a sort of like murmured pseudo-conversation because we’ve all been talking about this forever, not to make it specific but it is, about this motherf***er,” she said. “It’s just like one of those conversations we’ve all had a million times be so loud among people who really care about that.”
Stewart was one of an army of high profile women who spoke out about sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards. Reese Witherspoon revealed that she was assaulted by a director at age 16, Jennifer Lawrence recounted when she was forced to appear in a nude lineup of actresses wearing only pasties, and a handful of actresses told Yahoo Lifestyle about being sexualized by men as early as age four.
