A kid-friendly coffee shop with play space is opening soon in Charlotte
A new Black-owned cafe, Grow Cafe, is set to open in Charlotte in late July, offering the city a family-centered cafe experience.
Grow Cafe will offer a full espresso menu, lattes and bakery items. While you’re sipping your coffee, you can watch your children enjoy the play area.
Co-owner Stacy Baker aims to create a safe and engaging space for children and their families, a dream she’s had since 2017
“In 2020, that dream shifted into high gear because I had two back-to-back kids. I realized how necessary it was to have a place where families could comfortably spend time together — especially on Saturdays when getting out of the house is a must,” Baker told CharlotteFive.
The pandemic has made it challenging to find such family-friendly spaces.
“We used to drive 40 minutes or more to find a place designed for my children,” Baker said. “There’s a real need for children to have a safe space, and Grow Cafe aims to fill that gap.”
Baker emphasized that coffee is a necessity to have the energy to do “mom things,” and sometimes you don’t want to be outside. That’s where her cafe comes in.
What to expect
At Grow Cafe, there will be an area for parents to watch their children, along with engaging activities and play opportunities for kids, Baker said.
Grow Cafe will also feature private meeting rooms, making it an ideal space for tutoring sessions throughout the week.
“We are working on getting people who are willing to tutor in their free time,” Baker added.
The cafe’s owners hope to support nonprofit organizations dedicated to children with special needs and plan to host fundraising events to further that cause.
“Our communities were built to support children, but post-pandemic, raising children has become an isolated experience,” Baker said. “And I hope that Grow Cafe can be a place where other communities can come together and find their place.”
