Kern SAFE, BACC host ‘100 Dog Challenge’ spay clinic

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield Animal Care Center and KERN Safe hosted a low-cost spay and neuter event at the shelter on South Mount Vernon Avenue Wednesday.

On May 1, the ‘100 Dog Challenge’ gave pet owners the chance to bring four animals to the clinic for spay or neuter procedures. The procedure, which included a rabies vaccine, cost owners $40. Organizers say the event could help the shelter eventually end the need to euthanize unwanted animals.

“So, we’re trying to get ahead of puppy season, and as you see, puppy season is here,” said animal behaviorist Joshua Proctor. “We’re already seeing a huge influx and, by fixing 100 dogs, we’re literally preventing thousands — if not hundreds of thousands — of dogs actually being born right now.”
