For months, Katie Holmes wore Common Projects sneakers with everything. The look itself was relatable: plain white low-top sneakers. The price tag, though, was not: $416! For plain white low-top sneakers! Recently, Holmes has swapped out her famous expensive sneakers for the infamous controversial but affordable Birkenstock sandal. Or so we thought.
As it turns out, Holmes's latest go-to shoe is definitely still contentious. You either really, really love Birkenstocks or really, really hate Birkenstocks (although quarantine probably made you buy a pair regardless of how you really feel). But the sleek black pair Holmes has been wearing on repeat appears to be the most upscale version of the sandal and retails for $430.
The Birkenstock 1774 Arizona sandal is a more upscale take on the brand's signature silhouette. The classic double band is made of leather and features a sleek sole with leather lining sans cork. On Matchesfashion the 1774 sandal is styled with Jil Sander dresses and Loewe bags. In other words, Birkenstocks are no longer just for outdoor nature walks. Holmes styled hers with wide-leg jeans and a distressed t-shirt while grocery shopping in New York.
Thankfully, you don't have to spend nearly $500 to get Holmes's look. Birkenstock's signature silhouette, which the elevated 1774 sandal is an iteration of, is actually under $100 right now at Gilt's major Birkenstock sale. Other affordable iterations are available on Amazon and Nordstrom, too. And the great thing about Birkenstocks is that, regardless of the price tag, they'll always get people talking.
