Kate Middleton's uncle, Gary Goldsmith, has joined the new season of Celebrity Big Brother in the UK.
It's peculiar timing for a Middleton family member to seek the spotlight, as the Princess of Wales continues to recover from abdominal surgery. Reportedly, the Middletons are displeased that Gary is going on the competition, with a source telling the Sun, "Gary said he's been read the riot act by Kate's mum Carole and her dad Michael. They aren't happy he's going into Celebrity Big Brother. It is infuriating for them. Kate doesn't need this stress."
However, Kate's uncle is no stranger to controversy. Here's everything you need to know about him:
He's Carole Middleton's younger brother.
Kate's mom, Carole Middleton, has one brother: Gary Goldsmith, who is 58. (They have an 11-year age gap.) According to Tatler, Goldsmith sold his IT firm, Computer Futures, for £17 million in 2005. It's unclear what he has done in the years since.
Goldmsith has been convicted of assault.
In 2017, Goldsmith was convicted of assaulting his fourth wife, Julie-Ann Goldsmith, according to the BBC. He reportedly pleaded guilty and was fined £5,000, and sentenced to a 12-month community order with 20 sessions of rehabilitation. When reading Goldsmith's sentence, Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot said, per the BBC: "Both had been drinking and the taxi driver listened as you argued. Your wife accused you of taking drugs and leaving her alone for most of the evening. You called her a nothing and whore." Arbuthnot also described Goldsmith as a "mean, nasty drunk."
He owned an Ibiza villa.
Goldsmith purchased the villa, which he called "Maison de Bang Bang," in 2006. The Middletons spent a vacation there with Prince William, when he was on a break from Sandhurst. He recalls, "Carole asked if the family and Prince William could use [the house]. We organized a whole itinerary for them, including going over to a neighbouring island on a boat. Back at the house a friend of mine was teaching William how to mix on the DJ decks and he performed to the whole family as they swam. So they all had the Ibiza experience from mud baths, to [nightclub] Pacha, to learning how to mix music."
At that villa, Goldsmith was filmed with what appeared to be cocaine by an undercover journalist for News of the World, according to the Independent. Following that incident, Michael Middleton said, "You know we don't ever talk to the Press and the situation remains the same. We don't have any comment to make." While Goldsmith didn't respond to allegations at the time, in 2017 at his assault case, he said, "Until my case has been concluded I cannot comment on the allegations save to say that drugs form no part of my life, there was no drug taking."
Goldsmith put the villa on the market in 2015.
He has a daughter named Tallulah.
Goldmsith has one child, a daughter named Tallulah, with his second wife, Luan. Tallulah was born in 1997. "I think the girls and James were beautifully brought up and I'm trying to emulate that with Tallulah," Goldmsith said of his daughter in 2013.
Tallulah, who goes by Lula, studied psychology and medical sciences at Newcastle, and graduated in 2023. According to her LinkedIn, she now works as a Wellbeing Engagement Manager at Hapstar. She's also on Instagram @lulamjg, though her dad does not make an appearance on her feed.
Goldsmith attended both the weddings of Kate Middleton and Pippa Middleton.
Goldsmith was at the weddings of both of his nieces. Of Kate and William, Gary said in 2013, "When I saw them together you actually just thought, even if he wasn’t going to be the King, they would make a great couple. They were very, very good together."
