Kate Middleton Reveals That Mary Berry Inspired Some of Prince Louis's First Words
Mary Berry is an iconic British cook and food writer with more than 70 books to her name. As it turns out, she was also the inspiration behind some of Prince Louis’s first words.
The Duchess of Cambridge has revealed how, in the earliest days of her youngest child beginning to talk, Prince Louis would pick out Berry's face on cooking books on the shelf and say: “That’s Mary Berry.” Kate shared the anecdote during filming for the BBC Christmas special, A Berry Royal Christmas, which features the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge showing Berry the work of some of their charities.
“One of Louis’s first words was “Mary,” because right at his height are all my cooking books in the kitchen bookshelf,” the duchess said during filming for the program, which airs Monday evening in the U.K.
“Children are really fascinated by faces, and your faces are all over your cooking books, and he would say “That’s Mary Berry” ... so he would definitely recognize you if he saw you today,” she said of her son, who will be two in April.
During the hour-long special, Berry joins William as he visits homeless resource center the Passage. She also spends time with Kate at the Brink, the U.K.’s only dry bar, which was set up by charity Action on Addiction.
“They don’t just arrive and shake a few hands make a few smiles and a speech, they want to get involved, and they want to see what they can do,” Berry says of the couple.
“And it isn’t just one visit, they come back again and ask for the results and they remember who they spoke to last time. I think that’s remarkable.”
The program culminates in a Christmas party hosted by William and Kate to thank staff and volunteers working over the festive period. The royal couple help cook the food, with Berry designing the menu, which includes beetroot and chocolate cake, stilton and fig tartlets, beef stew with ginger and horseradish, and stained glass biscuits. There is also a mocktail on the menu, inspired by Berry's visit to the Brink with the Duchess.
A Berry Royal Christmas airs Monday at 8:30 p.m. on BBC One in the U.K. At this point, it's unclear if or when the special will air in the U.S.
