From Kate Middleton to Princess Diana, 10 Times the Royals Totally Rocked a Headband
Confession: Since Kate Middleton introduced us to her Zara headband last month, we’ve had headbands on the brain.
So naturally this left us wondering: Is the Duchess of Cambridge the only royal who loves headbands and “hatbands”? If you don’t know what a hatband is, you’re not alone. Allow us to explain.
On her blog So Many Thoughts, royal fashion expert Elizabeth Holmes coined the term, which refers to a “substantial headband, which can also be worn for occasions that would otherwise require a hat.”
And as it turns out, some of our favorite royal ladies have been wearing both hair accessories for years. From Kate to Princess Diana, here are our ten favorite times that royal women rocked headbands.
1. Princess Beatrice & Princess Eugenie: 100th Birthday of the Queen Mother
Allow us to begin with two royals—and we’re going back to the early 2000s. This sister duo looked adorable at a Thanksgiving service at St. Paul’s Cathedral honoring the 100th birthday of the Queen Mother.

2. Kate Middleton: Prince Louis’s Christening
The best way to celebrate the christening of your youngest? With elegant accessories, of course. And here, our first example of a “hatband” (check out the height!).
At the christening of Prince Louis in July 2018, Kate rocked a cream band by one of her favorite designers, Jane Taylor. The ivory headpiece, the Cassandra, featured a thick platform and appliqué flowers on top.
3. Princess Charlotte: Meghan & Harry’s Wedding
Of course, floral headbands count. And no one wears them better than Charlotte herself. Exhibit A: when she attended the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
4. Princess Diana: Emperor Hirohito Dinner
We just had to include this piece worn by our forever fashion icon, Princess Di.
The Princess of Wales sported the showstopping headband at a dinner hosted by Emperor Hirohito in Japan in 1986. She opted for a pleated royal-blue evening dress by fashion designer Yuki to accompany the sapphire-and-diamond-encrusted headpiece.
5. Kate Middleton: Baby Archie’s Christening
We’re sensing a theme here...
In the official photographs from the christening, we see the Duchess of Cambridge wearing a stunning pink Stella McCartney dress. But it’s her headband that really has our attention. Kate’s locks are held back by a velvet plaited red headband that totally matches her red Gianvito Rossi shoes.
6. Princess Beatrice: Met Gala
Princesses go to the Met Gala too, y’all.
In 2018, the Princess of York stepped onto the beige carpet in a deep-purple Alberta Ferretti dress. She accompanied the look with (you guessed it) a bedazzled headband (OK, technically a selection of headbands) and we’re getting some serious crown vibes.
7. Princess Diana: Klosters, Switzerland
Sports...but make it fashion. Once again Diana proved that 1986 was the year of the headband.
Here, she holds her skis and poles during a holiday in Klosters, Switzerland, wearing a Head ski suit and a braided pink, red and white headpiece.
8. Princess Eugenie: Church AT SANDRINGHAM
We’re taking a page out of Princess Eugenie’s holiday lookbook this year and rocking a headband on Christmas Day.
Last year, the royal attended holiday church service at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham estate, while donning a silk black headpiece.
9. Lady Kitty Spencer: Dolce & Gabbana Catwalk
Looks like Princess Diana’s niece Kitty is even more like Princess Charlotte than we thought—she also loves floral headbands.
In 2017, the longtime Dolce & Gabbana model even walked the runway in a red rose crown.

10. Kate Middleton: Festival of Remembrance
Just last month, Kate stepped out for the Festival of Remembrance alongside the rest of the royal family. And while she looked chic (as always), one little detail stood out: her Zara headband. (Psst, it’s still available online.)
The duchess paired the embellished padded Zara headband ($30) with a navy blue dress, Jimmy Choo pumps and an Alexander McQueen clutch. It’s official, K-Middy is our headband queen.
