Kate Middleton and Prince William Have New Titles on Social Media
Kate Middleton and Prince William have changed their names on social media to reflect their new titles following the Queen's death. If you head over to their Instagram, their name is now "Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge" while their bio reads "The official Instagram account of The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, based at Kensington Palace."
This name change took immediate effect upon the Queen's passing, and it's one of several to come. But while the Duke of Cornwall title automatically goes to the eldest son of the monarch, Prince William will likely have to wait a beat to be named Prince of Wales. This title is traditionally given to the heir apparent, but it has to be granted—meaning it could technically be given to someone else (which is very unlikely). At the moment, no one is Prince of Wales, as title “ceases to exist” when the previous Prince of Wales (aka Prince Charles) becomes king.
Once Prince William does become Prince of Wales, his wife Kate Middleton will become the Princess of Wales, a super significant title last held by Princess Diana. A source told The Telegraph in January 2022, “It’s hard to see it not happening. I’m sure it’ll be a bit of a bittersweet moment. This is her [Diana’s] son and his wife, so in some ways, it will be coming full circle—but it will also be a poignant reminder of what we all lost.”
