Kate's Lace Dress Had a Hidden Tribute to Princess Diana's Style
Kate Middleton wore floor-length teal Jenny Packham gown on Thursday to an event with Prince William.
The dress was a subtle nod to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, who wore a similar dress to the 1985 premiere of Santa Claus: The Movie.

Kate Middleton looked radiant on her glamorous date night out with Prince William on Thursday. The royal couple stepped out to attend a gala honoring one of their key charities, Tusk.
For the occasion, the Duchess of Cambridge donned a teal Jenny Packham gown. If the dress looks familiar, it's because she wore it six years ago to kick off the London 2012 Olympic celebrations during a gala at The Royal Albert Hall.
The stunning floor-length dress has a plunging neckline, cap sleeves and a beaded belt. But perhaps even more impressive is its intricate lace, button-up back.
The beautiful detailing may be a subtle nod to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, who wore a navy long sleeve dress with a similar back to the 1985 premiere of Santa Claus: The Movie.
The Princess of Wales accented the look with a sparkling choker.
The Duchess of Cambridge paired her look on Thursday with a matching teal clutch and silver platform sandals. She wore her hair down in a bouncy blowout.
This isn't the first time Kate's paid homage to Princess Diana's style. In October, she stepped out for an engagement in Essex sporting a chic all-black ensemble-turtleneck, skinny jeans, and ankle boots included-paired with a sharp gray plaid blazer by Smythe.
In 1984, Princess Diana paid a visit to Dr. Barnado's Charity in London wearing a similar jacket. Her version, however, was a knee-length double breasted coat.
The late princess wore the gray coat more than once. Twice, she layered it over a white collared shirt and a bowtie or a black ribbon.
Kate and William left their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, at home at Kensington Palace on Thursday to attend the gala, which took place at Banqueting House, in London. The event was an awards ceremony to honor people who have accomplished extraordinary work with Africa's wildlife.
"It is vital that we recognize the dedication of these unsung heroes and the bravery of rangers risking their lives, day and night, on conservation’s frontline," Prince William, a royal patron of Tusk, said of the awards.
This is the first time Kate has attended the event for several years, according to People. She first went to the awards ceremony in September 2013, marking her first public debut since giving birth to Prince George.
