Johns’ Hill Magnet School mural underway
DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — One Decatur school is bridging the gap between themselves and the community. They’re doing that through art.
School officials, students and community members collaborated to come up with the idea. Now they are bringing this mural to life.

The plan is to use the space for school events, activities and festivals. The school wants to make sure it’s a space where it connects students with others in the community.
A painted four-square court will be part of the mural. This so far has been the kid’s favorite part. They love being able to actually use the mural for a game that they enjoy playing. But there’s even more they’re excited about.
“Kids are extremely excited here at Johns Hill. Again, we are the arts integrated school in the district,” Principal Michelle Bonebrake said. “And so, for them to really see a project from start to finish and really see all the phases that goes into it behind the scenes as well as the finished product, it is a really good learning experience for the students.”
Students continue to help paint the mural with the Jasper Street beautification committee and the city arts council. Phase one of six is done, and she tells me it should be completed by November. You can find it for yourself at the bottom of the hill near the soccer fields.
