Joanna Gaines on How She Revealed Baby #5
When it comes to pregnancy reveals, we've seen parents come up with some pretty clever and unique ways to share that a baby is on the way. But for Chip and Joanna Gaines, the fifth time around was all about family and keeping it simple.
When the Fixer Upper couple discovered they were expecting their fifth child-a baby boy due sometime this summer-they didn't wait to share the exciting news. In fact, they told their four kids, Drake, Ella, Duke, and Emmie, the exact same day.
"When they were younger, we waited [to tell them]," Joanna tells CountryLiving.com. "Typically we'd say, hey let’s wait a couple of weeks before we say anything, but we told them that day. Out of anybody, we were most excited to tell the kids. Now that they’re older, they get it and understand."
Joanna, whose Magnolia Table cookbook was just released, wanted to surprise her kids, so she laid out some baby clothes for them to see. "I had all these onesies out that [said] ‘big brother’ and ‘big sister’ and I made them turn around and look at it. And it took them all a second to figure what the heck it was about," she says.

Joanna knew their reaction would be the best part, which is why she recorded the whole thing on video. And she was right! "I mean, they lost it," she says. "They were so excited, and I think that’s what makes me the most excited-that they’re celebrating with us."

This time around, the entire Gaines family is coming together and celebrating their baby boy on the way-and that's been Joanna's favorite part of this pregnancy. "Back however many years ago when I had Emmie, they were all so young," she says. "They were four and under, and they didn’t really get it. But now, I have an 8-year-old kid to a 13-year-old kid, and every day they ask how many more days until the baby comes. So that’s been the most exciting thing-watching how excited they are."
And all that enthusiasm is also helping Joanna face some worries that all moms-to-be experience. "Emmie is now eight, so now I feel like this is a brand new thing," she says. "I don’t even want to think about delivery. I don’t want to remember it. I think we all block that out."
"For me, it’s just hunkering down and spending as much time at home as I can," she added. "I feel like [I'm] figuring out how to be a mom to a newborn again." But this time around, it looks like she'll have four very excited siblings there to help her out.
