'Jeopardy!' Fans Lose It Over Contestant's Baffling Mix-Up: 'Best Jeopardy Moment Ever'

Through the years, there have been many embarrassing wrong answers on Jeopardy! However, a baffling mix-up during a February episode of the trivia game show might take the cake.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, a contestant named Deb Bilodeau mistook a photo of U.S. Olympic figure skater Scott Hamilton for U.S. Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton. And viewers can't get over the humorous gaffe.

Bilodeau faced off against fellow Jeopardy! contestants, Mira Hayward and Jesse Matheny, when the identity mishap went down during the first half of the game. Under the $800 tile in a category titled "40 Years Ago 1984," the following clue was offered: "At the winter Olympics, this American won gold with a 4-and-a-half-minute program that featured multiple triple jumps."

When Bilodeau was the first to buzz in, they answered, "Who is Mary Lou Retton?" Neither Hayward nor Matheny buzzed in, prompting host Ken Jennings to reveal, "Who is Scott Hamilton, actually," with a smirk.

Bilodeau immediately clasped their hand over their mouth while laughing and offering up a "sorry."

Although Bilodeau ultimately won Group 2 of the Champions Wildcard—earning a spot in the 2024 Tournament of Champions—folks on social media had a heyday with the answer.

One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, "Who is Mary Lou Retton? Scott Hamilton is wincing somewhere right now."

Another person replied, "I’ll bet Mary Lou Retton isn’t feeling particularly flattered either lol," while someone else pointed out, "She did explain she left her glasses at home."

Meanwhile another X user wrote, "I laughed so hard I spit on my phone!"

Yet another X user declared in all-caps, "SOMEONE ON JEOPARDY JUST THOUGHT A PHOTO OF SCOTT HAMILTON WAS MARY LOU RETTON I'VE BEEN WHEEZING FOR FIVE MINUTES."

"Best. Jeopardy. Moment. Ever," someone else declared.
