Jennifer Garner Says Her Hair Is Healthier Than Ever Thanks to These Products
Ask anyone about the most memorable scenes of 13 Going On 30, and their answer will most likely include Jenna Rink’s getting-ready montage that features icy-blue eye shadow, bright pink lipstick, and a piecey updo accented with rhinestone clips, all soundtracked to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” But Jennifer Garner, who plays Jenna Rink in the 2004 film, could not have a more different beauty outlook.
“My hair philosophy is the same way as how I approach makeup, which is that if you take care of your skin and hair, then you should feel good without adding anything major,” Garner shares with BAZAAR.com. “As I get older, I probably need more mascara or to give my roots a little help, but I don’t have to do that, because I know that my skin and hair are as strong as ever.”
Ahead, we catch up with the actress to chat about her latest ventures, including launching a TikTok and her Pretend Cooking Show, as well as the reason why she rarely uses a mirror.
Can you walk us through your hair care routine?
My day usually starts with a really hard workout. Then, it gets all gross, so I have to wash it—most likely with the Virtue Recovery or the Full line. I always do a mask over the weekend to treat my hair. Once I’m out of the shower and give it a towel dry, I always use a little 6-in-1.
And then, I am really into the new Frizz Block Smoothing Spray right now. I didn’t realize that I had frizz in my hair until I used it in this heat we’ve been having—and I realized that, yep, I do have frizz. I was recently in Chicago speaking for Once Upon a Farm and Save the Children, and it was so humid. The Frizz Block totally saved me. And it also preserved my blow dry and kept my hair frizz free for up to 72 hours.
Can you describe your perfect hair day?
A perfect hair day involves [my hairstylist] Adir [Abergel] doing my hair for an event. The rest of the day I just walk around with great Adir hair.
I wish we could all have Adir-level hair every day.
Yes, exactly. But more realistically, my hair is half wet, half dry, and then I put it up in this pin that I'm obsessed with—I’ve given one to everyone. Then, at some point, I take it back down, and it has body from having been up for a little bit. And that is how I roll.
Do you think your products make a difference in the amount of trust you have in your hair?
Yes, and without a doubt, this is the healthiest my hair has been—even compared to when I was a kid and had never used a product in my life. Virtue really transformed my hair. There’s this protein in every single one of their products called Alpha Keratin 60ku that is the same protein we have in our fingernails and our hair—it’s extracted from human hair. Then the protein goes into your hair as it’s being washed or conditioned or with a mask, and it repaves and refills the damaged hair shafts from the root down. It even helps with humidity and makes it more resistant to environmental factors that make the hair brittle.
Is there any beauty advice that you’ve received that has stuck with you and maybe you will pass down to your daughters?
My beauty advice is always the same: Look in the mirror less, obsess less, and look at the rest of the world to see what you could be using your time for instead. We all look at our faces more than people used to, and it doesn’t do you any good. You obsess over changes or how to fix something on your face.
My advice is to look at the mirror less and be cautious when it comes to injecting anything into your face. Be very, very incredibly judicious and wait as absolutely long as possible to add anything. Don’t think that you’re 37 and you need to be shooting up your face. You don’t need to wear so much makeup or have such a constant blowout.
You’ve had some viral TikToks, from being in the White House to inviting fans into your shower as you wash your hair. Are there any stories on how those TikToks came to fruition?
Wherever I go, [my assistant] Mo is with me. She plays a billion different roles in my life, and one is doing all of my social media among a million other things. We were in the White House with Adir, and they were playing music. So, of course, Adir and I, we were like, “We have to dance.” We dance every time we’re together, and this time we were in the White House just waiting for the First Lady. Mo started filming us being goofy. We ran into the Christmas tree. We were waltzing away, and the First Lady walked in. We almost whacked her across the face, and the Secret Service did a catalyst. We were totally busted waltzing in the White House by Dr. Jill Biden.
Oh, my god. What a first impression though!
Yes, exactly. The other TikTok, when I was in the shower in the wetsuit, was a product of me trying to show my hair care routine in the shower. But how do you show yourself in the shower without revealing anything? With a wetsuit or bathing suit. We really made it up as we went along. There was no real plan with this video.
Funny enough, Christa Allen, who played the younger you in 13 Going On 30, is also big on TikTok. Have you guys ever interacted on the app or outside of it?
She actually played me young twice. I don’t know that we have interacted in the last few years, or in a while. We have run into each other before. But I need to hunt her down and see her, because she is a peach. She’s such a beauty. I am so lucky to be connected to her with such happy memories.
You have your Pretend Cooking Show. How did that get created? I also love your relationship with Ina Garten. Has she given you any cooking secrets?
I grew up with a mom who made every meal. I didn’t bake a lot as a kid, but my mom made bread on Sundays and homemade pizza dough on Friday nights. I definitely grew up very much around a very competent cook. I started cooking for myself, right when I was first starting out as a baby working in theaters. I’ve always loved to watch someone cook. It’s just very soothing.
I don’t know if that reminds me of my mom or what, but my favorite person to watch cook is Ina Garten. I love Martha Stewart as well—she was my OG favorite. But Ina knew how much of a fan I was, and over the years, we became friends, which thrills me to no end. She could not be more supportive and has shown up for me in moments of need and has really been there for me in a huge way. I love and respect her.
The Pretend Cooking Show really happened because I had just joined Instagram and I thought, What the heck am I going to do that’s authentic to me? Well, what I love are cooking shows, but I can’t do a cooking show, so I’ll do a pretend cooking show. It kind of became a thing, and I have fun with it.
