Jenna Bush Hager is facing a new and confounding situation as a parent, with her 10-year-old daughter Mila obsessing over skincare.
Hager brought up the topic on Today with Hoda and Jenna, telling her co-host Hoda Kotb, "Let me just go ahead and state this: I have children who are into skincare. They do not have cell phones. They don’t even have iPads. So it is happening, it’s spreading down..."
"My daughter Mila told me that she went to Target yesterday with a friend. And she goes, ‘Look what I bought. This mini Aquaphor, how cute is this?’" Hager went on, recounting a recent incident involving Mila's love of skincare. "She goes, ‘Why don’t you ever care about that? Why don’t you ever care when I tell you the scrub I purchased?’ I’m like, ‘Mila, because you don’t need it. Look at your beautiful skin. You don’t need it.’"
Bush Hager and Kotb discussed how the obsession could've gotten to Mila, with the former blaming TikTok, noting that even though Mila doesn't have an account on the social sharing platform, the other kids do, and what starts as a trend, then "becomes the fabric of our culture."
In response, Kotb brought up a great point, talking about how a lot of skincare products include ingredients that can be harmful to kids' skin, before adding, "The goal of most women over 25 is to have the skin that they had when they were the age of the kids."
But to Hager, she mainly seemed perplexed as to why kids are obsessing over skincare rather than other things created for kids, like Barbies or Nintendo: "It’s so bizarre to me that their playground is a drugstore, where, when we were little, we wanted to go to like, Toys 'R' Us and such."
The comment section on the show's social media post about the segment was full of debate, with some blaming social media, and others saying that it's the parent's job to say 'no.' Others supported the early interest in skincare, with one fan saying, "I think we are raising strong young women who are confident enough to take care of themselves and prioritize self care. It’s really up to the parents to be involved and set boundaries."
Mila is Bush Hager's eldest daughter, but she also has another daughter named Poppy, and a son named Hal. Meanwhile, Kotb has two young daughters named Haley and Hope.
