J.Crew's Dock Shorts Are Downright Perfect. And Right Now, They're on Sale.
Update, May, 12, 2021: It has now been more than two years since I wrote the ode to J.Crew's Dock Shorts below. And upon revisiting, I realized something: It's all very much still true. They are the perfect, all-scenario shorts for your summer. Especially so considering the fact that this summer, we're all looking for go-between garments that work just as well lounging on the couch as they do sipping an Aperol Spritz by the bay with friends. These shorts are great for that. And that, too. With eight color options, you'd be hard pressed not to find a pair that fits the palette of your wardrobe quite nicely. And, if you're like me, and everyone else in the world, you've become accustomed, if not addicted, to the drawstring waistband.
All of which is to say, don't spend another minute thinking about what shorts you're going to wear to all those post-vaccination functions piling up on your Summer 2021 calendar. Just grab a pair or three of these bad boys and get ready to answer the question, "Where are those from?" Bonus: Right now they're on sale for 25% off with the code FLASH.
For all the pride I have in my ability to procure jawns, I realized something last summer that brought me much self-inflicted shame: I only had one pair of decent shorts. And they were bright orange. And I'd pretty much worn through them.
Rather than doing what any normal human being would do—especially one with an addiction to buying clothes—and go buy a dang pair of khaki shorts, I wore jeans and chinos outside all summer. And on the days that were too hot, I tortured myself into planning a fit around a pair of orange shorts.
By summer's end, I took a hard look in the mirror and then rode my bike down to J.Crew to see if anything had gone on sale. Lucky for me, something had, and it turns out it was perfect. And so, not long after, I bought another. And then, when I was planning my last vacation, I bought another. I speak of J.Crew's dock short—a casual, lightweight, easygoing pair of shorts that look Country Club but feel Swimming Pool.
The first pair I got were navy, the second pair were khaki, and the last pair were a textured, lighter blue. Between the three of them, there's not a summer fit I can't handle. They've got side pockets, and even a nice deep one on the back right. My wallet has never fallen out, not even riding a bike. And beyond the impressive variety of available colors, the Dock Short also delivers everything else you look for in a good short.
Length-wise, it passes the Goldilocks test with flying colors with a 6" inseam—a nice happy medium between a thigh-happy 5 and a flirts-with-your-knees 7. It's not tight, but slim enough that the fit isn't at all boxy. And best of all, the fabric is as breathable as it gets. It's just another way these shorts find a happy medium. They're thin, but not flimsy. Substantial, but not stifling.
I can't suggest highly enough that you grab a few pairs of these. Wear them with a button down, a T-shirt, or (on chillier of summer nights) a sweatshirt. They'll look just as effortlessly put-together with all of them.
