Internet Slams Ethan Slater’s Broadway Casting News After Ariana Grande Romance
Ethan Slater, who has been embroiled in internet drama ever since his alleged romance with Ariana Grande went public, is headed back to Broadway, but some patrons of the Great White Way are none too pleased.
The theater community has been eagerly anticipating the complete casting announcement for the Broadway transfer of the Kennedy Center's Spamalot, but as Playbill broke the news on Instagram, revealing that Slater—who previously held the role of Boq in Wicked and SpongeBob in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical—would be replacing Rob McClure as The Historian/Prince Herbert, reactions took a turn.
"The way I ran to the comments when I saw Ethan ??," one follower wrote, with plenty of people admitting they'd done the same knowing the unhinged comments that were sure to follow.
Folks sure didn't disappoint with the humorous backlash.
"Three heroes and a zero," one person dubbed the cast members featured in the photo: Slater, along with James Monroe Iglehart, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, and Christopher Fitzgerald.
"Not spongebob ruined marriage and cheated wife pants," one comment read, while another questioned, "The cheating sponge?" and a third wrote, "Not sir. cheat a lot!"
"ARIANAS MAN, WHAT IS YOU DOIN HERE?" another comment referenced the popular TikTok audio that stemmed from an Instagram Live Nicki Minaj once did.
"y’all knew what you were doing putting him in this pic," someone accused, while another couldn't "imagine all the negative press surrounding Ethan Slater is gonna be good for that ??."
"Ethan taking on a role Christian Borle originated is just- too on the nose," another comment read, with someone else following up, "I think they should just bring Christian Borle back instead." Borle famously, allegedly, cheated on his wife, Sutton Foster, with his Legally Blonde costar Laura Bell Bundy.
If you missed the controversy, Slater allegedly cheated on his wife with his Wicked costar, blindsiding her ahead of filing for divorce.
