Interested in showing off your artwork at Windmill Island? Here's how
HOLLAND — The annual Art on the Island Gala will return to Windmill Island Gardens from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, as local artists display their creative interpretations of the garden's beauty.
According to the gardens' website, artists can submit work for a chance at cash prizes in several categories, including art created on-site, photography capturing a moment at the gardens, or "best of the rest," which includes artwork in any medium inspired by the gardens. First place is $300, and second place is $150. People's Choice and Best of Show will also earn $150.
“All of the artwork has to be inspired by or created right here in the park, so we see a lot of florals and paintings and pictures and artwork about the windmill,” said Andrea Bork, programs coordinator at Windmill Island. “It began originally as a fundraiser to help repair and restore the windmill, and it became such a popular event that we bring it back every year.”
This year's suggested theme, “In Living Color,” aligns with the garden's summer motif, according to a press release.
The winners will be announced during the event. Artists must be 18 years or older to participate, and may submit up to three works for the gala by Sept. 1 for a $30 entry fee, according to cityofholland.com/936/programs-and-events.
Every piece on display will be available for purchase until Oct. 1. Admission to the gala is free, with available appetizers and a cash bar.
