An Insider’s Guide to the Miami Design District
Each week seems to welcome a new attraction at the Miami Design District, whether it is the unveiling of a fa?ade for its riotous parking garage or a new high-fashion flagship (Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Céline are just a few of the tenants). Plus, this past December the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami opened alongside the De La Cruz Collection and the Rubell Family Collection, adding more than a little fine art to the mix.
Developer Craig Robbins (who also founded Design Miami/, natch) is intent on making the Design District a shopping hub to rival Bal Harbour, drawing in famous architects and artists to realize his dream of a year-round design destination. Don’t know where to begin? T&C asked Robbins to share some of his Design District recommendations-you’ll be sipping, shopping, and snapping selfies like a local in no time.
Favorite spot for a drink?
“The Mayhaw Bar inside St. Roch Market.” (T&C tip: Pronounced “Saint Rock,” this is the second outpost of the super-popular New Orleans’s food market and cocktail bar.)
Best meal in town?
“Michael’s Genuine Food + Drink. Start by sharing the stracciatella with heirloom tomatoes and definitely order the jumbo stone crab claws if they are in season.”
Must-see events?
“Design Miami/, of course. Besides that, Emilio Estefan’s Palm Court Performance Series (weekly live musical performances) is returning for a second season. Watches and Wonders is also returning in 2019, which means you no longer have to go to Basel to see the latest in luxury watches.”
Insider’s secret?
“The amazing arches in Jade Alley were designed by architect Daniel Toole specifically for this space just off the Paseo Ponti between Christian Louboutin and Céline.”
Best places to take a selfie?
“It’s hard to pick, but Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Dome, Urs Fischer’s Bus Stop, and FENDI might be my top three.”
Exclusive to the Design District?
“Aubi & Ramsa, which serves decadent, boozed-up ice cream. And Italian clothier Empresa and Istanbul jeweler Sevan Bi?ak?i both have their sole U.S. locations here.”
